Kanye West made bold claims that he is the architect of the past two decades of music. “I invented every style of music of the past 20 years, I created the genre,” he asserted. “I created Weeknd’s genre. Trav, Drake, everybody.”
His statement sparked heated debate on social media, with many viewers expressing disagreement.
“NOT ALL GENRES NOT EVERY STYLE,” responded rapper Boosie Badazz on Instagram. “NOT BOOSIE MUSIC. YOU CAN’T RELATE TO NOTHING I RAP ABOUT R YOUR MUSIC. NOBODY LISTENS TO KANYE IN THE PROJECTS R THE TRENCHES IM, A GON HEAD N SAY IT ‘MY PEOPLE DO NOT RELATE TO YOU.’ “
Kanye West has since countered Boosie’s criticism, writing on his Instagram Story, “I JUST SAW THAT ‘WIPE ME DOWN’ WAS MADE IN 2007. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHATEVER THAT GENRE WOULD BE CALLED.”
West’s claim that he originated auto-tune music has also been contested. “I invented the auto-tune album, 808s,” he stated. “Everybody thinks about Trav, Weeknd, and Drake but no one thinks about Future and Thug also.”
However, many credit the use of auto-tune in mainstream music to T-Pain’s 2005 hit “I’m Sprung.”
Despite the controversy, Kanye West’s influence on contemporary music remains undeniable. His innovation and experimentation have shaped the sound and style of countless artists and genres. Whether or not he is the sole creator of every musical style of the past two decades is a matter of debate, but his impact on the industry is undeniable.
